A fixture that was last played nearly a decade ago was resurrected, as Exiles made the journey to Southern Railway & Kenley CC (SRKCC). A hard but interesting looking pitch on a sunny day didn’t prevent both sides from wanting to bat first, sadly Exiles lost the toss.

Exiles in the first half of the innings bowled pretty well. Naren was characteristically accurate, and the team chipped away with regular wickets leading to some thoughts of rolling the opposition out for less than 120. Ling was on a hat trick at one point, courtesy of a ball which bounced and moved away as the new batter gloved it.

The bowling wasn’t as tight in the second part of the innings and SRKCC got themselves to 146-8, when their number 9 hit the accelerator pedal to end up on an unbeaten 60 not out and get the team to a challenging 195-8.

Exiles felt disappointed, but the score was chasable given a strong start, although we were informed after the match that a par score on the ground is 150.

SKRCC started tight and bowling wicket to wicket, lbw appeal one after the other. The natural pitch variation started to show, it became obvious Exiles hadn’t bowled at the stumps enough as LBW decisions were given and a number of batsmen got bowled, not always through bad shots (author excepted!).

Evan Roberts showed how it could be done with his highest score for the Exiles, defensively using less pad than his father, Keith, and unfurling a lofted drive which has never been seen from Roberts Snr’s blade.

Although Exiles were not bowled out it was a chastening 108 run defeat as we were out bowled, in reality 150 would have even been a tough chase for the team.
