The afternoon’s cricket began with a coin toss for captaincy and a coin toss for batting positions. The now captain – Wingfield - then went on to win the toss in the middle electing to bat first. The weather was fair to cloudy with very occasional sunshine and the wicket a little greener than we’ve seen here before but was clearly confident in the batting abilities of the team.

Old ruts were certainly keen to get on with things with this square leg umpire (at the time) noting opposition fielders’ comments that it is “So village” that they were being left waiting for the game to start while the batsmen padded up.

Things started off sublimely with Shahid cracking the first ball of the innings for 4 and not long afterwards one followed for 6. Shortly thereafter things started to go a little awry to put it mildly. Exiles were very quickly 5 wickets down for 26 runs facing some tight bowling with movement both in the air and off the pitch especially at one end where bounce was a little unpredictable at times.

With Prasanth at one end seeing two wickets falling on the same score, followed by his own soon after, it didn’t look like Exiles would survive 10 overs let alone 40.  Aloysius then began to hold one end up after initially surviving an oppo bowler’s hat-trick attempt, as a further couple of wickets fell with the score now 32 for 7.

The consolidation then began as Ling entered the fray with the pair putting on the innings highest partnership of 41 ably assisted by extras before Aloysius was removed from the crease with a ball that kept low.

Ling then played some fine looking backfoot drives along with a few well-placed edges as he was joined by Crossland playing stylish pre -meditated sweeps, together putting on 34 runs for the next highest partnership before Crossland was removed for LBW.

The innings finally ended on 113 all out with Ling undefeated on 35 having posted his highest score with the bat in difficult circumstances for the team.

Exiles reply with the ball was better than the scores suggest. Naren and Bilal began well with Bilal bowling sharply and accurately and the lifting ball close to taking the edge on a number of occasions. Naren began characteristically tight at the other end gained an early wicket of one of the openers caught nicely by Crossland behind the stumps.

Massie was another of the bowlers who looked particularly good and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Unfortunately, the run chase was more of an amble and Old ruts made the requisite total with ease with one opener making his half century and number three in the forties.

With only three Exiles batsman into double figures the chatter from the umpire (Old Ruts member) about Exiles having chosen to bat first may have been justifiable but impossible to know. The final two games of the season coming up and an opportunity to turn things around especially with the bat.
