Exiles were well beaten by Whalers at Chiswick on Sunday.
Skipper Bernard was delighted to win his first toss in ages and excitedly chose to bat. On a green top, with overnight rain not long gone and leaden skies. Not to mention the now traditional near foot of grass covering most parts of the pitch B outfield.
Batting wasn't easy with the Whalers bowlers getting regular swing and some seam, and bad balls were either only hit for one or two - mainly due to the outfield - with the Exiles total significantly fortified by 18 wides when the Whalers bowlers did err.
Keith and Bernard actually put on 25 in reasonable time to open the innings before the skipper was 'bounced out' by a short ball from Whalers Dan Osgood that he could only scoop to square leg. Keith soon followed - walking off for a catch despite both umpires later stating they both thought it was a bump ball - probably motivated by a potential broken thumb from another lifter a few overs earlier.
Exiles then quickly lost Shahid, the returning JPJ and Jonny and were soon 49 for 5. Andy and Jibs succeeded in consolidating the innings for a while with a patient partnership of 32 but once they both fell the innings fell away swiftly to 103 all out - with Naren frustrated at being stranded 47 short of his half-century - and extras - with 28 - comfortably the top scorer, as only three Exiles batters reached double figures.
Exiles needed quick wickets with the ball and it didn't happen with conditions now seeming much more benign. Whalers Dean set the tone - hitting the first ball of the innings for six as the openers put on 53 in no time. Andy made a breakthrough with the other opener hitting straight to mid-off, and there then became an entertaining passage of play as the Exiles tried to take the key wicket of Dean.
If anything it seemed the Exiles managed to reduce Dean to their level - as he started off so impressively - middling everything initially - before seeming to lose his form - offering very presentable chances to mid off and slip and surviving a close call attempted catch by Andy at gully with the catch only denied due to Andy's uncertainty as to whether it was a clean catch - before Masie took things into his own hands and bowled Dean, albeit off his pads.
Further wickets were needed to make the game interesting and despite an excellent spell from Masie, and Andy's best efforts to make a stubborn ball swing they weren't forthcoming, although a lid was kept on the run rate for a while.
The spin twins of Evan and JPJ - with nearly 50 years age difference between them - were then introduced - with Jon getting some drift in an accurate maiden - and Evan beating the batsmen in the flight a couple of times before being hit for the winning boundaries.
So well played to the Whalers who were considerably better on the day, although some Exiles players were left wondering how much closer the game might have been had Exiles fielded first.
