In my first game for the Exiles in three years, I was the first to arrive at the Nursery Road ground. Had I made a mistake about the venue? Or was I in fact playing for the Clapham Nomads? I was relieved to see some several other cricketers arrive who turned out to be members of the Unabombers team who were expecting to play against Energy Exiles. We all went out to the middle, but all of us struggled to find the wicket such was the generous covering of grass across the whole square.

Eventually the players in both teams arrived and we agreed on a choice of wicket and that with the threat of wet weather later, we would play a 30 over per innings fixture. Captain Ling won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to field and take advantage of the green wicket and overcast conditions.

Naren Patel and Shahid Iqbal opened the bowling and Unabombers made a brisk start at 5 per over before three quick wickets to Naren set them back and slow down the scoring. The 4th wicket partnership rebuilt the innings and Phil Ling and Andy Wingfield kept up the good work restricting the score.

The later Unabomber batsmen mowed a few boundaries, but the Exiles took all their catches and within their physical limitations, fielded well on the ground. The catching was probably the difference between the two sides. Unabombers closed on the competitive total of 155 for 7.

Keith Roberts and Shahid Iqbal opened the batting for the Exiles and put on an excellent 70 for the first wicket. Keith defended well while Shahid played many bold shots in his 50. Unabombers put down several catches with their bowler, “Lucky”, really failing to live up to his nickname.

Ajmal Safi and Jamiel Wadair kept up the run rate with fine attacking innings. Andy Wingfield kept his nerve to see us home to a five wicket win with nearly two overs to spare.

This was a good win against pleasant opposition in a very enjoyable match. There was not much between the two sides, but the superior Exiles catching on the day made the difference.
