As the team started to gather for the agreed 1.00 pm start it became clear that numbers were going to be slightly lower than expected. Bernard pulled out at the last minute and alerting Masie to be on stand by in case he was needed. Alas Masie was kept on call until 16.47 when Bernard finally realised that he would not be able to make it in time for the game.
Stand-in captain Amil won the toss and elected to bat. However, this created the first problem for the skipper as those present declined to open with Keith who has yet to find a regular opening partner. No volunteers from those half a dozen present meant that if would be Amil but as he was about to pad up Shahid appeared and saved the day.
Shahid started well with a fierce square cut for 4 and looked in good form, however, a few deliveries later he appeared to dab an out swinger into the ground and was caught in the slips by Pip. This turned out to be controversial as Shahid stood his ground as he was not sure whether the ball had hit his shoes or the bat. The umpire (me) thought it was a bump ball. After consultation with the non-striker (Keith) the finger was raised.
Jonny after his half century against Merton in the previous game came to the crease only to get what I call an unplayable ball from Dan which deviated in the air at the last minute to hit the stumps and the Exiles were two down with the score not even in double figures.
Next in was Zeeshan who was watchful at the start of his innings and once he settled down punished anything short and hit a big six which resulted in the ball being lost in the bushes along the square leg area. Amil joined Keith and the rebuilding of the innings started until Keith was given out LBW to a ball which hit him above the knee roll and could have missed the stumps.
This left Exiles tottering on 54 for 4 with the premiere batsman gone and only bowlers to come. The first of the bowler was Satish who was bowled for 1. Evan departed next for 1 and Amil followed caught at midwicket off a mis-timed pull shot.
A mini rebuilding started when John joined Alex with John as a junior partner. After a hesitant start Alex showed what he was capable of with the bat. He played with confidence and hit two lovely fours before being bowled for 14. That left Exiles at 93 for 8 and only Naren left who realised that the score of under 100 was going to be thoroughly inadequate against the strong Whalers batting line up hence he was plotting a surprise.
Ajmal had just arrived at the ground to meet Shahid and at the fall of the last wicket was pressured on to put on the pads with just 5 overs left. He did not disappoint and it was just like the January sales “everything must go” scoring 54 off just 29 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes ending the Exiles's innings on 151 giving something to bowl at the Whalers’s strong batting line up. The last wicket putting on 58 runs a club record. Naren contributing whopping 2 runs.
151 was never going to be enough and it turned out to be that way. If Exiles had any chance then they had to take some early wickets but their openers had different idea and settled in right from the first over. In the second over they started to score freely punishing any loose delivery.
The strategy was to try every bowler in the hope one of them getting a breakthrough but it did not happen. The opening pair put on 40 but Matt and Pip continued to play confidently before Pip was LBW to Evan for 49. Evan also bowled skipper Matt with a well flighted delivery.
In the end the the Whalers knocked of the runs in just 23 overs.
