Rather warmer conditions this time for the second visit this season to Nursery Road of Streatham & Marlborough. Since the first visit has brought with it an absolute run fest, hearts sank a bit when Phil returned from the toss (standing in for our slightly delayed skipper) with the news that he’d lost the toss, we were bowling, and that he hadn’t managed to negotiate a reduction to 35 overs either! And we were still another player down, as Carl was doing the once traditional tour of the several Nursery Roads in South West London. Those of us who had resisted the pull of watching England make their customary lousy start to a major football tournament were suddenly thinking that the sofa would have been a better option after all.
But all was not lost! Carl arrived during the first over (and with an actual bona fide spectator… well, OK his partner) and Naren and Satish proved miserly upfront, creating the scoreboard pressure for Andy and Phil (no doubt keen to atone for his misdemeanours at the toss) to come on and spark an extraordinary collapse whereby S&M (ahem, maybe I won’t try that abbreviation again!) went from 50-0 to 50-4, with the help of some reliable catching from Alex and Carl.
Thereafter it proved tougher going, as the Streatham middle order fought back, and we lost control a bit in the middle overs. However, just as the England football team defied expectations and held on to a 1-0 lead, we gritted our teeth and hung on in there, with Evan, Andy (on one leg), and Phil all chipping in to peg Streatham back again with regular wickets. Highlights for seasoned Exiles watchers included Phil circling under two skiers – one (off Evan) he held comfortably, the other (off his own bowling), not so much. In fairness, the latter also featured the keeper and yours truly making unhelpful feints to get involved… At the end of it all, we were left with a target of 166 to win.
In reply, Bernard and I got going pretty quickly in what shows promising signs of being a decent opening partnership (so long as you’re not looking for 2s being turned into 3’s!). Bernard in particular was soon timing the ball beautifully, and making the most of the razor sharp outfield. Before you knew it, Exiles had knocked off almost half the runs in just 14 overs without loss…
We should of course have spotted the signs. The opposition, with an uncanny sense of what the Exiles would most like to see now, decided that “pace off” was the way to go, and a number of twirlers got the nod, exploring both the length and breadth of the pitch, not to mention the aerial conditions. As usual, this proved too much for Exiles and suddenly we were 112-4 and making very heavy weather of the chase.
Amil and Phil came together and slowly at first began the rebuilding task. After a well-timed drinks break, a couple of big overs looked to have broken the back of it, and again confidence coursed through the veins of those with a bit less history in the club. But Amil went, hitting a half-tracker straight to midwicket, and Satish fell too, with just 3 needed, bringing Andy slowly to the crease, accompanied by Carl as a runner (the reason that Andy was slow to the crease was only partly due to his injury – he’d also had to wait for Carl to pad up again, having discarded said pads in thoroughly misplaced faith in his playing companions!). Andy promptly hit his first delivery straight to cover… where he was dropped… and from there on, two junior Roberts and Patel were able to breathe a little easier as a combination of extras and Ling’s broad bat finally got us over the line. Congrats to Phil on a career best score for the Exiles, making his eventual ascent to the status of all-rounder seem just that bit more likely!
