Exiles managed their first victory of the season in their 4th game. After losing the toss yet again, Exiles were put into bat and got off to a flyer. Bernard and Keith continued their good form with an opening stand of 99 before Keith was out for the first time this season for a well made 34.

Bernard continued past 50 and hit some excellent shots all round the wicket but eventually started to tire in the heat. The outfield meant an unfortunate number of runs required 'running' and Bernard was eventually out for a well paced 76. On another outfield and cooler day he could have possibly added to his 2 x 100s for the club.

Exiles eventually ended on a competitive 194 for 5, aided by a generous 17 wides. The only other noteworthy event was some highly dubious umpiring from Phil Ling when he gave Amil out lbw...

Merton lost a couple of early wickets as Ling and Naren opened with some tight bowling. However, they recovered strongly before Gundry entered the fray and pinned them back in his opening spell. The match then swung back in Merton's favour with a good stand and with the Exiles starting to look jittery, Gundry once again stepped up with a well held catch off.

At this point, with the game finely poised, Bernard called up his high maintenance fast bowler in the expectation that he would finish off the game. After shattering a few stumps and the Exiles back on course for a win, Gundry announced some hitherto unknown injury issues. Some careful management got him through the remainder of his spell as he cleaned up the tail although he struggled to dislodge Merton's youngster. However, it was a memorable spell and Gundry finished with an Exiles career best 5 for 12 from 7 overs.

It was an outstanding effort from Bernard and Gundry with Simon just taking the MoM award from the skipper.

For future reference, the following 'Gundry Management Techniqes' should be added to the captain's notes:

Scenario 1

Simon starts complaining of injury issues (usually some mild strain of some kind) at a critical stage of the match and states that he may only be able to manage an over more

Management Technique: pretend to sympathise, gently tell him to bowl the next over and ask him to see how he is feeling after that. After he takes a wicket the following over repeat the process. Before he realises it, he has either bowled his overs or won the game

Scenario 2

Simon is unsure what to do when a kid comes into bat and starts helplessly looks around for advice

Management Technique: let him decide to bowl spin/ slow of his accord. Shortly afterwards the embarrassment of not being able to hit the stumps will see him gradually speed up without realising it. Once he reaches about half pace he'll bowl the kid out
