Exiles would definitely have considered themselves underdogs against a fairly strong and very youthful Old ruts side but, we finally had a sunny day in May, great for an afternoon of cricket !
Upon losing the toss, Exiles Captain Ling took his side to the field in conditions favouring the opposition batting first. The track looked flat and a short boundary on one side meant that Exiles would need to put in a very good performance to restrict the runs.
Exiles started very well with tight bowling from Naren and Bilal keeping Old Ruts well in check and taking out the opposition openers relatively cheaply.
With hindsight, the very clear turning point in the match was during Andy Wingfield’s first spell with number 4 batsman not walking to a fine edge caught behind the stumps whilst in single figures. Unfortunately whilst the noise of willow on ball was very clear to all fielders around the bat, it was not given by the umpire. Number 4 promptly went on to score a match winning ton and with the opposition all out within their allocation overs, it is unequivocally the turning point to the match as he scored nearly half the runs.
Exiles shared the wickets around and with some unexpectedly tight and dare I say it, athletic at times ground fielding, Exiles did look like holding Old ruts around the 180 mark at one point. Unfortunately number 4 batsman took his second opportunity at the crease very well with some dismissive batting particularly later in his innings causing a bit of carnage to bowling figures and taking Old Ruts to a decent 213 all out in 39.2 overs.
Exiles got their innings underway and were well up with the run rate for roughly the first 20 overs. The track was still good albeit slower but bounce was undeniably variable especially at one end taking its toll on a few Exiles batsmen. With regular wickets taken and a partnership high of only 36 between Thomas and Aloysius, no batsmen stuck with Thomas long enough to give the visitors a good enough chance of winning the game. Thomas for his part held the innings together nicely and made a very well-played and unbeaten maiden 50 for the Exiles finishing as man of the match on 63 not out.
The visitors encouragingly did bat out their overs, though losing by 62 runs in the end. Exiles are still seeking their first win of the season – perhaps next week against Merton, onwards and upwards !
