Keith scored a sublime unbeaten century at Nursery Road on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to stop the Exiles slipping to a 52 run defeat to Streatham & Marlborough CC.

There was a certain sense of trepidation amongst the Exiles ranks coming into the game following two heavy defeats against these opponents in the brief 2020 season, but on an initially slightly damp track, Naren and Phil made excellent inroads into the Streatham top order - striking thrice between them to reduce the away side to 31 for 3.

Naren continued to bowl straight through to complete a classic spell of accurate seam bowling - finishing with 2 for 19 off his 8. However there was always the concern that the Exiles were a bowler or two short for this fixture and this proved to be the case as the majority of the change bowlers found consistency elusive.

Number 5 for Streatham - Dale - soon got into his stride - and showed a terrific eye in dispatching the ball regularly - though mainly to the leg side boundary - on his way to a hard hit century, before retiring. He was supported by the correct no 3 who made 41 before one from Andy popped off a length to take the shoulder of his bat through to John behind the stumps, and the no 6 who also retired once he'd brought up his fifty.

The Exiles were grateful for the retirements as Streatham at one stage looked set for 280 or even closer to 300, with Phil the main beneficiary as he picked up two late tail-end wickets.

256 for 6 was the final damage as the match headed for tea, a decent score no doubt, but one the Exiles were hoping they could get close to with a decent batting line up and a pitch that was now playing well.

The start of the reply wasn't great though as Mahesh, Shahid and Darwin all got out to rusty looking shots, although Keith started fluently. Amil made his return at 5 in his last match pre nuptials and although a tad scratchy at least started helping Keith rebuild the innings.

Skipper Bernard looked in good touch and started playing some characteristic shots before holing out off a half-tracker at square leg. At 131 for 5 in the 30th over, Andy joined Keith, now on 78, for what proved to be the biggest partnership of the innings of 72.

Trying to play positively Andy very nearly copied Bernard in holing out at square leg - three balls in a row - as one just evaded the fielder on the deep square boundary, the next was parried right on the boundary as a six was turned into just one, and the third landed short.

Thereafter the middle of the bat was found a few times as the Streatham later bowlers provided more scoring opportunities as Andy raced to 36 before chopping on a delivery a foot outside off stump at the start of the 39th. Phil was happy to pass up another opportunity to further cement his all-rounder status as he allowed Alex to join his Dad who was now on 99.

Alex survived the rest of the over without using his bat, before Keith tapped the first ball of the final over to the leg side for an easy single to bring up a magnficent ton - his last for the Exiles was nearly 15 years ago - against British Library in August 2006 - when he also brought up three figures in the last over of the innings.

It was a characteristic innings of class, composure and concentration, scoring on both sides of the wickets and looking very much in control - and only one of the Streatham change bowlers in truth looked like he might get Keith out. A lesson to all the other Exiles batters in innings building - and if Exiles are ever to chase scores of 250+, then the template to achieve this would likely involve Keith to score 100no at one end - and the more attacking middle order players to score more freely at the other end.

This is the 12th Exiles century of all time - with Keith getting his second to join Bernard on 2, whilst Sam Scott, Jon Taylor, Mark Bradshaw, Dan Gauntlett, Jon Tither, Karamvir Mangat, Steve Parkinson and Huss Qureshi all have one.

So it wasn't to be a victory on this occasion - as Exiles finished ultimately well short on 204 for 6 - but another performance of encouragement - and there was just a brief sniff when Andy was with Keith that something unlikely might be achieved.

And so a break next weekend for the Exiles before a rematch with Streatham - in Dulwich next time - in a fortnight.
