We welcomed Graces CC for their inaugural match at the Abbey Rec, however, following a double-booking, and the potential of a fracas with some scary looking blokes… who to be fair, had every right to be there… we decided that the safest thing to do was to relocate to an un-prepared pitch at Dundonald Rec.

Mindful of the danger, the guys picked the most level part of the square to set up stumps; it was too good of a day to not play! The captains agreed on a 30 over game, and tossed up… With Graces winning and surprisingly deciding to bat first. Secretly we were happy with having the new ball on an uncertain pitch.

They soon began to regret their decision to bat first, as the ball was swinging wildly for both Jibs and Andy and their batsmen struggled to get bat on ball. The pitch, considering its condition, to its credit, seemed to be playing ok.

The first strike came courtesy of a run-out following a slight misfield from Huss and then Andy followed up with two quick wickets to have Graces reeling at 3 for 3 in the first couple of overs.

Their number 5 came in and was their best batsmen, showing everyone else that patience was required and started to build partnerships with those around him.

Jibs showed great control with the ball and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Yahya and Faisal bowled well but Graces battled on hitting some decent shots, and stealing quick singles.

Masie came on and bowled a good line and length and immediately got results from the pitch, taking the pace off the ball resulted in a lot more variation with the bounce and picked up 4 wickets for 33.

Their final pair frustrated for a while, edging a few boundaries, and a Yorker from Andy saw the end of Graces innings who ended up on 136 all out, a tough target given the conditions.

Exiles reply didn’t get off to the best of starts with Bilal mistiming a lofted drive to mid-off in the first over to give them early hope. Shahid showed signs of class, smashed a humungous six, but was bowled trying to go for another big heave shortly afterwards.

Dom batted extremely well given the conditions, and was ably supported by Bernard – the Exiles were in cruise control, and looked well placed for a victory at 96 for 3.

However, a dubious lbw decision for Bernard (25) saw the beginning of a mini-collapse, with Yahya getting bowled first ball, and Dom (43) quickly following after.

Graces were clearly on top at this point, with their tails up, they bowled a consistent line and length to Simon and Andy who had to dig deep for their runs. After Andy fell, it was down to Simon and Jibs to see us home.

Needing to pick up the run-rate, Simon went for the maximum, but was caught on the boundary, millimetres away from scoring a 6. The fielders all moved in sensing victory.

The final over we needed 11 to win. Jibs belligerently picked up the first ball of the over and dispatched it over cow-corner for 6 which put the pressure back on to them.

The bowler came back well and bowled three dots in a row, but then somehow, managed to get it wrong in the penultimate ball, and Jibs thankfully hit a sweetly timed 4.

Last ball, two to win. Fielders came in – trying to stop the one, and it was a brilliantly bowled yorker angled into the legs, which nut-megged Jibs and through to the keeper. Faisal had to run no matter what and immediately legged it after the ball was bowled. Luckily for us, the keeper fumbled and Faisal made it home for a tie. Phew!

In hindsight, a super over would have been great! But we were relieved not to lose. Overall an excellent encounter in a match that looked in some doubt earlier in the day, and the council gave us a refund!
