Eiteen hundred an' sixty-two, on a summer's efternoon;
Aw tyuk the 'bus frae Balmbra's, an' she wis heavy laden,
Away we went alang Collingwood Street, that's on the road to Blaydon.
(chorus)
Ah me lads, ye shud only seen us gannin',
We pass'd the foaks upon the road just as they wor stannin';
Thor wes lots o' lads an' lasses there, all wi' smiling faces,
Gawn alang the Scotswood Road, to see the Blaydon Races.
We pass'd the foaks upon the road just as they wor stannin';
Thor wes lots o' lads an' lasses there, all wi' smiling faces,
Gawn alang the Scotswood Road, to see the Blaydon Races.
Durham kept their heads in a tense finish as they beat Warwickshire by three wickets to win the One-Day Cup. Durham’s support stretches from North Yorkshire up through Durham into Tyneside, up the Tyne valley, across to Cumbria and Northumberland up to the borders and some fans may even creep down across the borders (now it is staying open).
Washington CC were well represented with a 16 strong mini bus speeding to HQ through the night at a speed restricted 62mph, the driver must have the patience of a King! So what song would a north east team winning a national cup competition in London sing….. Aw went to Blaydon Races, 'twas on the ninth of Joon……what else would the fans sing??
Rocky 2 - 21/9/14
Exiles turned up literally in the backyard of some of their team, although Haydons Road has not been a regular Exiles venue in recent years.
Problem 1, where are the toilets? They were found in a nearby park but were described by one Exiles regular as like the toilet from Trainspotting…… At the start of Trainspotting, Renton (Ewan McGregor) has again decided to give up heroin but needs ‘one final hit to soothe the pain while the Valium takes effect’. He visits a dealer and takes two opium suppositories. Walking home, the constipation caused by his last hit of heroin subsides and he abruptly doubles over. Desperate to defecate, he races to a nearby betting shop. As the shop’s bathroom door swings shut behind him, it reveals a sign reading ‘TOILET’. The words ‘the worst’ appear to the left of it and ‘in Scotland’ appear to the right.
Problem 2, six stump holes on or near a length on the pitch marked to play on, the curator / captain with assistance from a local resident (Mr A Wingfield) sorted this out with soil and water, leaving to bake in the sun (well cloud actually) for half an hour.
Pheonix were the unknown opposition for the day and after losing the toss Exiles were fielding with 7, 8, 9 men? 10 eventually although seeing Mr Gundry and Mr Searle watching half the game could have made all the difference, although to be fair Simon was on playground duty.
Phoenix went for it from the off taking advantage of the short boundaries and with a full 40 over game a big score was on the cards, especially given one of their ranks was having a day off from Uxbridge 1st and Middlesex under 17s.
Boundaries continued but as did wickets and a double-wicket maiden from Andy Wingfield (3 for 27) in the 8th over stemmed the early flow of runs from the Phoenix batters.
Terence Moynihan (1 for 30) bowled superbly from the top end and was unfortunate to only pick up one wicket, but Marcin Zieleniewski (3 for 37) reaped the rewards of some accurate seam bowling to pick up 3 wickets at the other end.
Mac Malik a welcome new recruit for day (2 for 44) kept Phoenix scoring down to finish on 171 all out from under 34 overs.
Justin Lamprecht (38) on loan from Agricola but having to leave early with an important property deal to sign (on a day of rest?) blasted off and a steady partnership of 60 for the 4th wicket between Malik (30) and John Tither (30) the Exiles looked well placed at 118 for 3.
But Phoenix were blessed with a battery of 4 pace bowlers and the youngest of these (who finished with 5 for 9 off 6 overs) produced an unplayable delivery to dismiss Tither caught behind off the glove, which saw the start of an Exiles collapse to 146 all out.
Probably the best attack the Exiles has seen this season, although still a disappointing one for the Exiles to lose having been seemingly slightly ahead most of the game.
So Rocky 2 was lost, although Durham had won Rocky 1 the day before.
The captain finally got the jugs in at the end of game (having avoided any decent run scoring to celebrate all season) or was this the end of an era (still time for Rocky 3, 4, 5?), Terence popped up with another jug soon after to continue the Sunday evening drink.
