With an abundance of bowling talent up his sleeve, it was up to Chris Plume to best make use of these resources. The skipper duly lost the toss and was inserted by the opposition. The fun and games could really have begun now, with regular opening batsman Will Kent still nowhere to be seen. However, a calm, collected Plume strolled out to the middle with Leuvennink to accompany him. After a circumspect start, both batsmen got into the grove, with Chris playing some delightful flicks and Bernard targeting the point and cover region (often one handed!) to set the scoreboard ticking healthily.
A possibly unfortunate LBW decision went against Bernard, denying him another 50, saw Andy Wingfield come out in the unfamiliar no. 3 position. However, he was soon strangled down the leg side, gloving one to the keeper. Will had now arrived and was the right man to rebuild the innings. Chris then got a good ball, but not before notching up a solid, crucial half century. Another promoted batsman was next, in the shape of Ammar Akhtar, who immediately showed the benefit of working on his technique, with some lovely lofted drives.
Exiles did have a slight wobble when Ammar was bowled, with Terence and Simon following shortly after, but there really shouldn’t have been any concern, as Phil ‘I’m not a batsman’ Chamberlain walked out and accelerated the scoring superbly, with shots all round the ground. After another determined, anchoring innings from Will had come to an end, it was up to Marcin to end proceedings on a fun note, which he duly obliged. 213 for 7 at tea.
Tea was very pleasant and it was amusing listening to Phil Ling giving Naren Patel tips on providing an efficient spread.
Exiles went out to field confident, but fully aware that the very quick outfield could be of concern. This was highlighted by the oppo’s opening pair getting off to a good start with several mistimed boundaries. Chris, determined to rotate his bowlers, turned to the experienced pair of Ling and Zieleniewski to try and get a breakthrough. Ling soon obliged, ignoring a dropped catch, to fizz a ball past the batsman’s hopeful prod and hit the top of off. At the other end, Marcin was also rewarded, bowling the dangerous opener, after his customary one four-ball an over. Phil L got a second with smart take from Will.
Another change of bowling, brought the faster pair of Terence and Simon together to terrorise the rest of Ploughman’s batting order. They did this so effectively that hero with the bat Chamberlain could put his feet up. Moynihan, in particular was devastating, picking up 5 quick, almost identical dismissals, as his full, sharp, straight bowling was just too much for the opposition to handle, as they were unable to get forward quickly enough.
Simon also finally bowled the one thorn in the side, as their confident youngster finally missed a straight one. Phil C was required to bowl an over and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, as Marcin generously gave Terence the opportunity to pick up a brilliant 5-fer. 9 wickets bowled could well be a club record, much to the satisfaction of Naren Patel.
A good win was celebrated in the local boozer, where even Marcin admitted he may have been proven wrong!

Interview with Man of the Match: Terence Moynihan
On 3 August 2014, Exiles new recruit Terence Moynihan took 5 for 12 - with all wickets clean bowled - as the Exiles beat Ploughmans CC. This was the first 5 wicket haul by an Exiles bowler since July 2012. The Exiles website caught up with Terence to hear his thoughts on the feat:
Terence, very well bowled, it must've been a very good feeling to get a 5 wicket haul?
Yes thanks very much, it certainly is an awesome feeling to get a five wicket haul, one that I will never forget and it will live long in my memory as one of the better cricketing days that I’ve had. Once I got my fourth wicket I was so eager and keen to claim my fifth scalp.
Have you had many in your cricketing career to date?
That is my first ever five wicket haul and I’ve been close a few times on four wickets but everything came together so nicely and the cricketing gods were smiling at me on the day.
You took all your wickets clean bowled - is this your usual preferred wicket-taking method?
I like mixing it up when I’m bowling and I will try and work out which shot the batsman likes playing most and bowl accordingly but if memory serves me correctly most of my wickets have been caught behind or bowled.
Have you played a lot of cricket in your life so far? What do you make of bowling in English conditions?
I’ve played a fair amount of cricket, not as much as some of you guys haha and I didn't play much cricket in my school in South Africa as I couldn't make the side in Senior School cricket but I joined a club three years after that and played five seasons of second side club cricket where my passion for the game developed. I played a season in Milton Keynes for a Sunday Side which was my first taste of English conditions and its generally cooler in the summer here compared to hot and humid conditions back in South Africa so its more bowler friendly conditions here and you can push a bit of a longer spell. The wickets do offer for both bat and ball.
How have you enjoyed your first few games with the Exiles?
I’ve really enjoyed my first few games and thanks to Bernard for telling me about the club. All the Exiles players are really good cricketers and a great bunch of lads and they have all made me feel very welcome. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.
Any cricketing targets ahead?
I hope to score a fifty this season and get my wicket haul up to about 20 wickets for the season.
Terence, many thanks for your time, and here's hoping for a few more 5 wicket hauls from you along the way in your Exiles career!
