There was a lot of chatter before the game around whether the game would go ahead as the [weather] forecast was poor, however we need not have been concerned as despite deep pools of water in the car park the sun was shining and remained out all day eventually setting behind the bowlers arm at the tennis court end of Nursery Road.

The wicket was damp in the middle and on losing the toss Exiles would bowl first and hopefully capitalise on the early pitch condition. A reduced 35 over game was agreed for all the German and Argentinian fans in attendance who were keen on an early finish.

Phil C returning to action this season after a self imposed ‘exile’ in north London opened from the ‘famous’tennis court end. Back to his metronomic best with away shape to the right hander things got off to a sedate start with Marcin at the other end.

I still have the echoes of ‘Catches WIN Matches’ from my early junior cricket days ringing in my ears. ‘If you can’t bat or bowl then make yourself a good fielder’, Exiles do have people who can bat and bowl [and sometimes field – see end of innings] but the fielding really let us down this time – names will not be revealed to protect the guilty but the Captain missed a sharp, low, left handed [blinded by the sun] – enough excuses chance which might have changed the course of the game.

The opening partnership was broken by Marcin and Phil C showed the other fielders how to support your bowlers and take the first of 2 fine catches in the day (for younger Exiles out there C does not stand for that famous 4 letter word – COOL although Phil may argue otherwise but with Phil L also in attendance the C reference and taking 2 fine catches is probably enough to avoid any Phil confusion).

WICC were starting to rack up a sizable score of over 5.5 an over and only slightly slowed down by Bernard getting 3 wickets in 4 balls with a 4 in between which probably summed up the first half performance. Exiles did produce some splendid fielding in the last overs with Dom taking his second fine catch of the day out on the boundary and Jasper throwing down the stumps. Phil C 2 for 20, Marcin 1 for 20 and Bernard 3 for 40 were all good efforts but chasing 194 was going to test the Exiles 10 men (following on from having 13 players the week before Exiles only had 10 this week which is usually worth 20-30 opposition runs in the field).

Tither and Plume opened the innings against some decent pace bowling which seemed to liven up a little after tea. A solid start and near 50 partnership was broken when the pace of the innings had to be picked up if a serious challenge was going to be mounted.

Some fine cameo innings form Jasper and Bernard left it to Dom to continue his fine form and a better than run a ball 46 got Exiles scoring at nearly 5 an over but not enough to get near the imposing 194 total falling 30 or so short. Oh and a short mention of the other Phil, Phil L with a run a ball 6 not out, didn’t look in any danger playing a very fine forward defensive stroke that put the top order to shame, have we found a new Jimmy Anderson?

WICC batted and bowled better on the day but ultimately it was the fielding that let Exiles down. Fielding drills before the next fixture? Not a chance, as always just happy to get 11 players at the ground sometime near the intended start time!!!!!!!!
