As Chris Plume strode out for the toss, once again proving he is a wonderful tosser, the Exiles had six men laid around the boundary. One of which, Steve Parkinson, was looking a shadow of his former self.
An hour later, the Exiles were 64/0 from 15 overs. Having opted to bat, Chris had settled into his usual role of the season, accumulating quick runs at the top of the order, making life look easy and a good platform had been set with Craig Williams (29). Soon after however, the Exiles were 74/4 and looking troubled and nervous. In stepped Bernard Leuvennink (42) with his customary swashbuckling middle order contribution, and suddenly the Exiles were set to post a solid total. After Bernard was unfortunately dismissed, Andy Wingfield stepped to the crease, with scorer Phil Ling confidently predicting a quick and decisive knock from Andy to help the Exiles to the end of their innings. Andy was bowled after three balls, and the Exiles made 185/7, mostly thanks to Chris (87* off 118 balls) carrying his bat, showing some excellent strokeplay in amassing his third fifty of the season.
Tea was served, and the heavens opened. A Duckworth-Lewis app was swiftly downloaded, before the Exiles decided that Netherlands versus Mexico was an enjoyable alternative, and tucked into the cheesecake on offer.
After a rainy hour, the umpires dragged the Exiles away from the World Cup, and play continued. The Exiles soon asserted themselves, with Andy (3/17 off 7) dismissing the obvious danger man with a sharp caught behind from Dominic, and Phil Chamberlain (0/18 off 5) bowling excellently from the other end, without the reward his accuracy deserved. Scoreboard pressure had been applied early. The first change of bowling was where the game was decided. At one end, Phil Ling (1/2 off 8) bowled a spell consisting of seven maidens, which could have been more if Craig wasn’t such an idle and disinterested fielder in the covers, who inexcusably didn’t dive properly to stop the only scoring shot off Phil’s spell. Phil’s spell was hostile and unrelenting, reminiscent of the 1932 Bodyline series. At the other end, Steve Parkinson (2/17 off 8) bowled with pace and accuracy. Phil and Steve frustrated the batsman, who lost patience, and the game was in the Exiles hands.
Once the game was won, and two youngsters were at the crease, captain Chris seized a wonderful opportunity to come on to bowl, with a very economical 1/11 off 7. At the other end, Bernard (2/37 off 5) was introduced, receiving the biggest cheer of the day when he was hoisted for six back over his head by an inexperienced member of the opposition.
The Exiles cruised to victory as the opposition made 109/9 from their 40 overs, and began drinking, and tour dates and location for the following season were set. Chris reluctantly provided several beers for the team, the least he could do for a match winning knock of 87, and the Exiles headed home happy after a third win on the bounce.
