Energy Exiles beat British Library by one-wicket in a thrilling encounter played in the right spirit throughout by two equally matched sides. On the Exiles' arrival to the ground, we learnt that British Library's deadly spinner, Ken Price, was not playing. However, BL had a like for like replacement in Strollers' fast bowling allrounder, Simon French, who had wrecked our batting a couple of years previously. The Exiles had two debutants for this match, allrounders Phil Humphreys and Richard McKerrow, though we were without Jeff, who had previously promised to have a barbecue that weekend, but had not been seen for a couple of weeks.
Andy Wingfield won the toss and elected to field first, clearly the correct decision as there was some damp in the pitch and a slow outfield, which would quicken up as the afternoon went on. At this point, I must say that the outfield at the CSSG Chiswick is a complete disgrace to the Civil Service Sports Council; the grass is too long for a football field let alone a cricket field. Has the groundsman's lawnmower broken down? Or did that (allegedly) transvestite barman (not seen this season) elope with Jeff on it?
Marke and Brunning opened the batting for British Library against our opening attack of Andrew Wingfield and Naren Patel. Scoring proved very difficult as our opening bowlers were extremely accurate and in the fourth over, Naren induced an edge from Brunning with Humphreys taking a sharp slip catch. Marke and Aylott then played carefully to see off the rest of the openers's spells, with Naren finishing with 1 for 10 from his eight overs. With the introduction of Tither, BL looked up to increase their run rate, rather too quickly I felt, as Marke appeared to go straight from second to fifth gear and edged a rash stroke for Phil Humphreys to take another fine slip catch. The BL No.4 did not last long before he cracked a catch straight to Sam Scott at cover.
French and Aylott started playing more aggressively and put together a reasonable stand before French tried to mow Sam Scott through mid-wicket and missed. A further wicket quickly followed and BL captain Radia entered to partner Aylott, who was starting to look ominous. However, after John Tither had Aylott caught behind by a diving Wil Scott. Radia's extremely sensible innings ended shortly afterwards as he was bowled by a delivery from Humphreys which kept a little low. Unfortunately, Richard McKerrow was unable to find his length with his leg-spinners and we were all treated to a couple of tidy overs of "dancing bowling" from David Stiffell. The BL tail scraped together a few runs with the returning Andy Wingfield having the dangerous Michel caught behind as the innings concluded on 139 for 8. This was a fine bowling and fielding performance from the Exiles to restrict a fairly strong BL batting line-up to a total probably 20 runs short of par in the conditions. Wil Scott behind the stumps has a particularly good game in the field, taking two catches and letting only two byes, and David Stiffell also fielded very well.
Mark Bradshaw and Quentin Davies opened that batting against the fine BL opening attack of French and Marke, but experienced few alarms as they put on 34 at a reasonable rate before both fell to over-ambitious shots in successive overs. John Tither quickly followed and the Exiles were in some trouble at 39 for 3. Amil Patel and Phil Humphreys stopped the rot with a stand of 20 before Amil edged to gully and was dismissed for 11. Wil Scott and Humphreys then continued the good work as the Exiles finished the 30th over on 89 for 4-51 to win from 10 overs. It should be noted that Radia started bowling off his long run, but realising that Jeff Hilson wasn't around for him to bully, decided to switch to spin.
Despite looking comfortable for the victory, disaster struck as the Exiles lost five wickets for only 15 runs, leaving us requiring 26 runs to win with our last pair of Richard McKerrow and Naren Patel at the crease, with many of us fearing the dangers of Naren's rather erratic running between the wickets. However, McKerrow got us out of the mire, playing some fine leg-side shots against Radia's spinners, and Naren ran very sensibly. With seven needed off the last over, McKerrow saw us home with two balls to spare as we triumphed by one wicket, and for this performance, Richard McKerrow wins the Man of the Match award. As Naren returned to his team-mates, he was heard to say, "Now that was sensible cricket!" This was a splendid victory to which everyone contributed against one of our most sporting opponents - why can't every game be like this?
