It was with a certain sense of foreboding that I travelled to the far reaches of North West London on Saturday. There was thunder in the air and it seemed that the curse of Sam Scott was upon us yet again and a game involving him would be cancelled.

Miraculously the rain moved quickly away, and the pitch was deemed playable with one or two quibbles about the marking of the popping crease.

The toss was won by the Wealdstone and surprisingly, on what was still a pretty wet wicket, they opted to bat.

The Exiles rather mutedly took to the field missing four players who had obviously found the long trip North quite beyond them. Sam enjoyed the delights of the North Circular, Naren and Amil sampled the hidden joys of Ealing and Jasper and our resident Umpire Martin decided that the M4 was the quickest way to Eastcote.

The Wealdstone innings got away to a slow start with some excellent bowling from the skipper and yet another Mark discovery, a very hungover Dean Parkin (a pleasant chap despite being Australian). The first to fall was Meswani who seemed determined to hit sixes. He was replaced by another batsman intent on clearing the boundary and after hoicking a couple for four through midwicket he departed to a straight ball from the skipper. Naren took over from Andy and decided, unlike the previous week, to get wickets with straight balls, which he promptly did.

Wil took over from the impressive Parkin. Revelling in the chance to bowl at a left hander, his first over was probably the worst for Exiles since the glory days of Jonathan Cook (I'm probably being unfair to Jon). A mixture of wides, no balls and complete dross. In fact the batsman were being very charitable in trying to hit such nonsense. W Shah took particular joy in thumping the ball down the ground.

Fortunately Naren at the other end was keeping it tight and once Wil's 2nd nightmare over was completed the Skipper did the only sensible thing and banished him to fine leg, bringing on a proper bowler to replace him.

Naren removed the dangerous W Shah and Sam took two wickets in two balls, the patient opener N Shah and the not so patient D Shah.

The energetic (if slightly manic) Wealdstone keeper pushed the score along and was joined by the attacking Cundy. The Wealdstone innings eventually came to an end with a superb direct hit run out from Sam, all out for 155.

The common belief during an excellent tea (the fondant fancies were particularly enjoyable) was that we allowed them to score about fifty to many, though with fine keeping from Ian, the disturbing amount of extras conceded by the Exiles in the last couple of weeks was drastically reduced.

The Exiles innings began slowly and against some tight bowling it didn't really pick up. Mark drove uncharacteristically loosely at an off cutter. Wil strode out determined to make up for his bowling aberrations, unfortunately he walked back, head bowed two balls later. Amil was surprised by one that bounced above shin height, Jasper got caught on the back foot, Dean was bowled by excellent delivery and David was bowled trying to hit the ball to Pinner.

Amidst all the carnage Sharjeel was single-handedly taking the attack back to the opposition, hitting many a lusty leg side boundary. Unfortunately the introduction the speedy Afghan, mild panic set in as there was frantic calls for helmets. Sam defiantly stood tall and tried a few back foot drives, eventually edging behind (apart from Sharjeel, I think Sam was the only other Exile to hit a four). Andy was bowled trying flick a straight ball to leg, and Ian followed two balls later. Sharjeel was the last to fall for a valiant 30. Exiles were depressingly bowled out for 63.

For his innings of 30 on a bowler friendly wicket, Sharjeel Choundry was named Man Of The Match.
